What is AS/400 modernization?

Computer modernization means different things to different people. For IBM i users, modernization primarily refers to replacing the traditional green screens with modern look and feel Windows applications.

As young employees have entered the workforce, they are unaccustomed to working with green screens. This is true and new workers reject the green screen. So our first steps of modernization of the IBM i technology, is to replace the green screen.

Steps to modernization of the AS/400.

Step	Process of Modernization.	How?
1	Convert your green screen's data stream into a modern user interface.	This process can be completed quickly and at minimal cost. Many companies have implemented a GUI front end within as little as 4 weeks.
2	Begin a redesign phase. Pick one application and do a proof of concept.	Redesign your applications using tools like PHP. You will retain and use your existing business rules. Existing programs can be modified to work in a client server relationship with PHP, a Microsoft language or any middleware. This process will take a longer period and will depend on the number of applications/programs that you have. These new applications can be implemented together with step 1, until you have replaced step 1 with step 2.
3	Implement web services.	Web services is one of the primary ways entities communicate with each other today. We services are safe and secure and are rapidly replacing older methods of processing such as EDI.
